江戸時代の日本では、入れ墨は罪人を識別するための手段として用いられました。 この時代、犯罪者には黥刑と呼ばれる刑罰が施され、顔や手に入れ墨を施すことで、その人が犯した罪を社会に示すことになりました。
所謂、極道の入れ墨は流刑者などに彫られる腕章刺青を隠す為のものだったとか。 それが段々と極彩色化して個人を特定する目印になり、漁師などが海で亡くなっても何処の誰かが分かる様になったとか。
